When Monica walked past the Alberta Modern Hair Salon 5 ½ years ago, she just knew she wanted to work there. “It’s such a beautiful salon. I walked in and asked for an application.” Larry was in the salon and available, so they talked right then. It turned out that she and Larry had something in common – they are both from Washington Pa. She began working at AMH during her final 3 months of beauty school and has been there ever since; she believes she is fortunate to have found her work home at a young age.
Born and raised in Washington in a close family, Monica attended college after high school, studying education, but determined it wasn’t a fit. She took a couple years off to work retail, and eventually, attended and became licensed at Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy. Monica says that she learned the basics at beauty school but has learned the artistic nuance at the salon working alongside Jen, Marinna, and Taylor. “The information and knowledge they have shared with me has been invaluable. They’ve helped to shape me into the stylist I am today.” She believes that Larry wants young stylists to be capable, and credits him for providing her the opportunity to watch and learn. “The things you learn in school are basic, but the real learning starts when you get to work with great people.”
When asked what attracted her to hairdressing as a career, Monica said she likes to do things to make people feel good, both on the inside and the outside. “The work gives me an opportunity to do both. I can give them a great hairstyle, but I also like to listen and get to know the person inside.” Monica will ask a client “at what point in your life did you like your hair the best” so she can find a starting point. I try to see the person as they see themselves.” From there, she tries to learn what the client wants versus what they need. It can be a challenge to find the right starting place with a new client. “Sometimes a dramatic change is in order, and at other times we will find that happy medium.” This job requires energy, both mental and physical. Our success is built on trust. It’s never just hair.”
“I genuinely love and enjoy the people I work with. We make a good team. Our salon has attracted a top-notch clientele, and Larry has taught me that you attract what you are.”
